Jeep Motor Mount Lifts (MML)

A few words about MMLs.

Myth: Body Lift requires a Motor Mount Lift.

Some people say that a MML must be used with a body lift; that is a myth. Motor mount lifts (MML) and body lifts (BL) are not related except that a MML would eliminate the need to re-locate the radiator or fan shroud. This, on it's own, is not a valid reason for a MML. That being said, a MML can be installed on a Cherokee.

Using a MML to correct Drive Line Angle issues.

Under normal circumstances, motor mount lifts have only one purpose: to help correct driveline angle issues that are causing vibrations and/or u-joint binding.  In fact, installing a MML on a vehicle with no drive line vibration, may cause it.  Therefore, it's not really possible to calculate which (if any) MML is needed, simply by knowing how much lift is installed on a given vehicle.  The following link does an excellent job of describing the elements of drive line angle.  Drive Line Angle Information

How much lift is needed to get rid of driveline vibration?

As stated before, it's nearly impossible to determine if a vehicle is best with a stock-height motor mount or a 1" or 2" MML based on the amount of your suspension lift and/or body lift alone.  Most vehicles that have as much as 6” of suspension lift would probably use a stock height or 1” MML (depending on the remainder of the configuration).  A 2” MML has no place in most vehicles.  Remember, no MML will correct vibrations caused by a bent shaft or other failed part.  A MML will correct drive line alignment problems.  If this is the cause of your vibes, then a MML can be the solution.

About the rare 2" MML.

Some abnormal circumstances in which 2" MMLs may be useful include custom frames, custom engine installations, or bodies that require a particular engine position due to an out of the ordinary configuration.  Most typical lifts and other common modifications of stock vehicles do not fall in this category.  If you are considering installing a 2" MML, please check for enough clearance between the bell housing and floor pan. (Remember, you're moving the entire engine assembly 2" upward at the radiator fan.)

Select either Ultra-Flex Rubber or Classic Polyurethane bushings.

  • Ultra-Flex Rubber bushings are designed to dampen drive line vibrations. Usually recommended for vehicles that rarely, if ever, venture off-road.
  • Classic Polyurethane bushings give the off-road rig a sportier feel. If extreme is in your blood, these are a must.
  • The selection is often personal for Jeeps used as both a daily driver and weekend off-roader.
